From the lungs of the earth, Ecuador is a global change-maker and rises as one of the most biodiverse countries in the world, exceeding expectations in nature-based sustainable travel.

The country merges dense rainforests, amazing rivers, and prehistoric volcanoes with community, culture, and conservation. Ecuador has around 23.056 taxonomic species of animals and plants reported. So, this constitutes 6,1% of all species reported worldwide

In order to preserve its natural wealth, tourism needs to be as socially, ecologically, and economically responsible as possible. Here is how you can make it happen!

Ecuador’s Groundbreaking Debt-for-Nature Agreement to Safeguard Galápagos

Ecuador is one of the 17 most megadiverse countries in the world, so much so that it’s estimated to have more plants per unit area than any other country in South America. Ecuador is defined into 4 different regions all well-defined and rich in wildlife, one of them being the  UNESCO World Heritage Site known as the Galapagos Islands. This wonderful region showcases an incredible wildlife portfolio that can be found nowhere else in the world, which is why it has led to begin called by many a ‘living museum and showcase of evolution’. However, as magnificent as this destination is, it is also incredibly fragile. Therefore, the Ecuadorian government and other private institutions continuously join efforts in order to ensure the conservation of this wonderful ecosystem.

These conservation efforts made history when the Ecuadorian Government announced the largest-ever debt-for-nature swap. This type of transaction has been done prior by 18 countries, however, this one is the largest until now. The initiative will result in a substantial debt reduction of 1.1 billion dollars for the country, with 450 million dollars intended for the preservation of the Galapagos Islands. This incredible accomplishment will establish the Galapagos Life Fund, which will finance conservation efforts aimed at the marine areas on the islands. A vast part of the funding will be focused on Hermandad Reserve, and the Galapagos Marine Reserve, as well as sustainable fishing.

The Galapagos Life Fund will enable Ecuador to dedicate resources to long-term conservation projects, ensuring the preservation of wildlife on the islands. In particular, it will greatly benefit endangered migratory species such as whales and scalloped hammerhead sharks. But his historical Debt-for-Nature Conversion will not only benefit the Galapagos, but Ecuador and other neighboring countries. It represents a remarkable step towards sustainable development and paves the way for the continued preservation of the wonders of our planet. This truly makes Ecuador a global change-maker!

Sustainable Travel in Ecuador

Definitely, responsible tourism comes naturally in Ecuador. This is due to a combination of factors:

  • First, it’s people who are proud of their heritage.
  • Second, the will to protect the environment from the oil industry and its impacts.
  • And thirdly, in 2008, a new constitution was ratified and included a Chapter: Rights for Nature

Without a doubt, this recognizes that biodiversity in all its life forms has the right to exist and that everybody can contribute on behalf of ecosystems. Surely, Ecuador is an incubator for global solutions that enable nature and people to thrive together.
