Start with high SPF sunblock to protect your skin from the strong equatorial sun, as the islands are surrounded by water that reflects sunlight. A wide-brimmed hat or sports cap is essential to shield your face and neck. Sunglasses are a must to protect your eyes, especially polarized ones that reduce surface glare.

Finally, don’t forget toiletries, including toothbrushes, toothpaste, hairbrushes, face cream, and any personal care items. Additionally, carry insect repellent and EPI pens if you have allergies.

Apparel & Garments

Your Galápagos tour will likely include different types of activities, so you’ll want to pack a wide variety of clothing, like:

UndergarmentsShort-sleeve T-shirts

When it comes to clothing ideal for the Galápagos, opt for light-colored attire in white, beige, light brown, and light green or blue. These colors not only keep you cool under the tropical sun but also help deter insects. On the other hand, avoid bright colors, which can attract unwanted attention from insects.

You’ll also want to pack clothing options ideal for different activities and weather conditions. Hiking shorts, lightweight pants/khakis, short-sleeve and long-sleeve tees, bathing suits (at least two), socks for hiking, casual dress clothes, a fleece pullover or jacket for cooler evenings, and a windbreaker jacket. Don’t forget undergarments and comfortable footwear suitable for various activities, such as close-toed sandals, lightweight hiking shoes or boots, and anti-slip sandals or boat shoes. These should cover any and all adventures that await you in the Galápagos Islands.

If needed, bring appliance adapters as the outlets in the Galápagos are US-style, rated at 110V voltage. If you require prescription goggles, don’t forget to pack specialized snorkeling gear. Photographers will also want to pack extra batteries and memory cards.

Travelers should not touch the animals at the Galápagos

On top of being a top global tourist destination, the Galápagos Islands are also classified as a national park. As such, it’s vital to respect the strict conservation regulations that have been put in place to protect this delicate environment.

Don’t bring any type of animalsDon’t bring unprocessed foodDon’t bring any agricultural or plant material

Therefore, it’s prohibited to enter the national park with any foreign organisms (seeds, plants, animals, insects, etc.), as doing so could threaten fragile ecosystems and endemic wildlife.

Declaration of Goods

Finally, as of 2024, Ecuador eschewed its paper “declaration of goods” form for a digital version. This is a sworn declaration that all travelers must complete upon entry to the country/Galápagos, disclosing certain items. These include cash/valuables over US$ 10,000, certain foods, plants, or harmful items. You can access the online form here.
