They were <strong>founded by Spaniards<\/strong> <strong>conquistadors<\/strong> who came to South America. The <strong>Spanish<\/strong> <strong>crown<\/strong> gave conquerors <strong>large areas of land<\/strong> in return for their <strong>services<\/strong>. Moreover, the term <strong>hacienda<\/strong> comes from the Spanish verb <strong><i>haciendo<\/i><\/strong>, or \u201cthe act of <strong>making<\/strong> <strong>things<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Ecuador, haciendas are big <b>country houses<\/b> that were initially created as <b>estates<\/b> or <b>large farms<\/b>. However, over the years, <strong>many were transformed<\/strong> into beautiful <strong>hotels<\/strong>. They are <strong>colonial homesteads<\/strong> in <strong>rural areas<\/strong> that show the country\u2019s architectural and cultural heritage. First, you have <b>4 geographic regions<\/b> in a relatively <strong>small country<\/strong>. For example, it&#8217;s slightly <strong>smaller than<\/strong> the state of <strong>Nevada<\/strong>, in the United States, or <strong>Italy<\/strong>. However, <strong>Ecuador<\/strong> is one of the most <b>biodiverse countries in the world<\/b>. It has the <strong>6,1% of all species<\/strong> reported worldwide, according to the <a title=\"Ecuador is considered one of all species reported worldwide\" href=\"https:\/\/www.biofin.org\/ecuador#:~:text=Ecuador%20is%20considered%20one%20of,of%20all%20species%20reported%20worldwide.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Biodiversity Finance Initiative<\/a>.&nbsp;Secondly, the country has 5 <a title=\"Unesco World Heritage\" href=\"https:\/\/whc.unesco.org\/en\/statesparties\/ec\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Unesco World Heritage Sites<\/a>:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Quito:<\/strong> The city possesses one of the best-preserved historic centers in South America.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Cuenca:<\/strong> The Historic Center is an example of Renaissance urban planning in the Americas.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Andean Road System:<\/strong> The Inca road system, also known as Qhapaq \u00d1an, is an extensive communication, trade, and defense network of roads. Hacienda Chorlavi <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Legend has it that <strong>centuries ago<\/strong>, the <strong>great Inca<\/strong> Huayna Capac fell <strong>in love<\/strong> with <strong>princess Caranqui<\/strong> Pacha in the land where Hacienda Chorlavi was built. As a result, Chorlavi means <b>\u201cnest of love.\u201d<\/b> It became a hotel in 1971.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When I visited Hacienda Chorlavi with my family, we enjoyed the <strong>mix<\/strong> of a <strong>modern<\/strong> <strong>hotel<\/strong> and a <strong>comfortable<\/strong> <strong>hacienda<\/strong>. For instance, families can stay in <b>historic rooms<\/b> that are beautifully decorated. Also, kids can play in its <strong>lovely gardens<\/strong> and <strong>orchards<\/strong>. I recommend Hacienda Chorlavi because it&#8217;s a great place to <strong>stay with kids<\/strong>. It&#8217;s approximately a <strong>2h30m drive from Quito<\/strong>. Moreover, the trip is very nice because you\u2019ll be able to see <a href=\"https:\/\/rebeccaadventuretravel.com\/blog\/ecuador\/lake-san-pablo-adventure-time\/\"><b>Lake San Pablo<\/b><\/a>, pass the town of <b>Cayambe<\/b> (and if you\u2019re lucky, you\u2019ll be able to see the Cayambe volcano), and go through the <b>Guayllabamba<\/b> valley.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Likewise, Hacienda Chorlavi is very close to the <b>Otavalo Market<\/b>. Did you know that Otavalo Market is the largest of its kind in South America? In the market, you can find <strong>textiles<\/strong>, <strong>jewelry<\/strong>, <strong>souvenirs<\/strong>, and <strong>street food<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Otavalo Market, also known as <strong><i>Plaza de los Ponchos<\/i><\/strong>, is a prime tourist destination in Ecuador. I really liked that when I sat at the fireplace in the afternoon, I drank a hot <i>canelazo<\/i> (a local Ecuadorian drink). Also, a friendly receptionist explained the history of the property.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>They have lovely horses for a horseback riding trip. Their equipment is in very good condition and the horses are sweet for kids.
